The simple answer is, yes. Planning permission is required for any structure covering over half the garden, a structure which is not for domestic use or a structure which is over 3 metres high (from the ground) with a pent roof or 4 metres high (from the ground) with an apex roof.
There is no formula, or one-size-fits-all process to obtain planning permission, every case is different. The UK government states that you’ll probable need planning permission if you want to:
- build something new
- make a major change to your building
- change the use of your building
We would always advise speaking with your local planning authority (LPA) at the earliest possible time, and certainly before you begin to design and build your treehouse.
It is possible to make alterations to your property without planning permission (under national permitted development rights), that said you will definitely need planning permission for the development of a treehouse.
If you moved ahead with your project and completed the works without obtaining planning permission, while legally needing it, you could be served an ‘enforcement notice’ ordering you to undo all the changes you have made, effectively dismantling the treehouse or pod created.
